Grading Examinations

Gradings at the club are always conducted by KUGB qualified Grading Examiners. Examinations are held every
four months. To be eligable to grade you must have trained at least twice a week since the last grading. Training
less than twice a week will require you to have a longer interval between gradings.

The KUGB ranking system is subdivided into kyu grades and dan grades. Kyu grades are those grades below black belt, and run from novice (white belt), to brown/white belt at 1st Kyu. Gradings from 9th kyu to 1st kyu are conducted at club level by visiting KUGB qualified examiners. Dan gradings (for black belt) from 1st dan and 2nd dan are held at regional Black and Brown Belt Courses. Gradings for 3rd dan and above are held at national Special Dan Courses.

What do I need to know for my next grading?

The KUGB has a well established grading syllabus that can be used as a guide to what you will be expected to know and be able to perforn at you gradings. To find out what you need to know for your next grading click on your current grade in the list below. You should note that the grading syllabus is a guide. As sensei Brennan says "expect the unexpected". The kata videos used are intended to help you learn the basics of the kata. They are the best examples currently available; they may not be the current KUGB standard versions. Once you have learnt the basics of the kata you should work with one of your instuctors on the detail.
